Il Borgo
Fontecchio (L'Aquila)
- Traveller rating:
Following the old road connecting L'Aquila to Sulmona (s.s. 261) in the Subequana Valley the S. Pio village is adjacent to Fontecchio, a bigger village famous for its wonderful 13 century fountain and its tower with a clock, one of the oldest in Italy. From here it is possible to visit the Grotte di Stiffe, where an underground river, fed by the sink-holes water of the karst plateau of the Rocche, runs across the caves. Inside you can admire several small lakes and falls up to 20 metres high. Or you can make trips to the Velino-sirente park, or to reach the Gran Sasso Campo Imperatore area and its ancient villages or to visit L'Aquila or Sulmona, towns rich in monuments and art.
