Review:

Boy did we hit the gold mine when we stayed at Kogoj. We've just returned from 32 days in Europe, visiting 6 countries; and two weeks of the trip was spent in Italy. At the end of our time in Italy we had the pleasure of spending 3 nights at Kogoj. It was just what we needed. It was an oasis, a perfect place for us to recharge our batteries; but if you are looking for more than a beautiful and relaxing estate there's plenty of things to see and do close by. It's a good based camp for discovering what lies in the majestic Alps, or visiting the ancient cites along the coast or the bigger city of Trieste. A person can drive to Venice for a day trip. We had just come from Venice and we know that it is a short drive. There are lots of web sites that list things to do in Friuli Venezia Giulia. If you go to http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g187811-Activities-Friuli_Venezia_Giulia.html it will give you a review of some of them. We spent our days exploring Cividale del Friuli, driving in Italian and Slovenian country side, shopping, lots of eating and relaxing around the glorious pool at Kogoj. I believe there are 9 rooms, but we were the only ones visiting at the time. It was September and children were back at school, and the end of the regular vacation season. Even if all 9 room were to me occupied there is plenty of room for guests to have their private space on the estate. I can see Kogoj as a perfect place for a group of couples or families to stay. The door of our room was in a very short hallway with a few other doors which faced ours, like the center of a wheel with the rooms going out like a spoke. These rooms can be private or if a family or couples wanted to have doors opened it allows for larger areas for people to go in and out. In addition there are lots of places to congregate, whether it is in the breakfast area, downstairs sitting area or the many areas in the gardens. The personal attention we received was perfect. Silvio took good care of us and made sure that we had what we needed without being imposing. He made us feel special. It was the little things that you normally wouldn't experience, like Silvio suggesting that we park our car in his car port so the car did not get hot and when he called ahead to the restaurant we were going to have supper to be sure that we had a wonderful meal. One evening we took a bottle of wine (remember this is a vineyard too), bread, cheeses, seafood salad, and some prosciutto out to one of the picnic tables and had a leisurely dinner. Silvio discreetly came out and turned on some garden lights. We sat watching lightening and listening to thunder up in the mountains. It was magical! Our room and our bathroom was generous , clean and something that surprised me, screens on the windows. We love sleeping with the windows open but we hate mosquitoes. It was a treat to have them open and not worry about getting bit. The room has a fan so if you don't like the window open you can sleep with the fan on. There is so much more that we could say but what you should know is that Kogoj was absolutely a wonderful place! Now the secret is out.

Review:

This farm is well maintained and the owners very nice and very hospitable (home-baked cakes for breakfast), etc. The rooms are very nice and relaxing to the gardens and the pool wonderful. Except for the barking of the dogs in the neighborhood is not further heard.
The only downer for us was that Mr. Kogoj speaks only Italian. But we've managed with the hands and feet.
Highly recommended.
