Cori (Latina)
- Traveller rating:
Besides its landscape significance, marked by a luxuriant scenery and most of all a spectacular view on the pianura Pontina from Anzio to the Circeo mount, Cori has a great importance from an archaeological and historical point of view.
The history of Cori (ancient Cora) dates back further than that of Rome; its origins are lost in myth. The ancient scholars claimed that Cora was founded by Dardanus, a Trojan hero.
There are relevant archaeological evidences such as the temple of Hercules (II century b.C.), the cyclopean town walls, triumph of polygonal work ,made of large rocks of irregular shapes, typical for the development of the terracing walls of the town ( from VI to II century b.C.), the temple of Castor and Pollux and the Catena bridge (I century b.C.), as well as other ruins of temples preserved inside some of the more recent churches.
These archaeological examples interlace with the typical medieval architecture of the churches, among which the Chapel of the Annunziata (XIV-XV century a.d.) internationally renowned for its beautiful and extremely well preserved fresco paintings.
The strategic location of Cori allows visits to the capital (Rome can be reached in 30 minutes by train), to other main cities of central Italy and the to near sea which offers the unique scenario of sea-lake (Parco del Circeo) marked by the dunes and the macchia mediterranea (distance about 25km).
Only 7 km away is the fascinating Oasi di Ninfa, the botanical gardens of the Caetani Foundation, visited by a worldwide public for its peculiar setting within the ruins of the medieval town of Ninfa. A few kilometres away is Sermoneta, an elegant village on the hill where its castle (castello Caetani) and its charming lanes are certainly worth a visit.
Numerous activities are available in the local area, horse-back riding in the chestnut woods (Centro Ippico Fontana del Prato), hikes and walks on the Lepini Mountains organized by local guides and Gruppo Montagna Cori.
For the flying enthusiasts this area is well advantageous and there is a permanent flying school for paragliding and hang gliding in the near Norma (Wingover).
