Smerillo is located only 3kms from “Il Vecchio Tasso': it is a small medieval town that is situated at the peak of a mountain. With ruins of the original castle still visible it is a town that feels suspended in time. A path from Smerillo leads down to 'La Fessa' , a narrow gorge in the mountain that contains many fossils and is believed to be over 3 million years old. Originally used by the villagers of Smerillo as a means of escape, it is now a popular walk with tourists. In the town itself you can visit the Museum of Minerals and Fossils and Art gallery, containing a section of particular interest devoted to the art produced by local children.
Thanks to the central location of 'Il Vecchio Tasso' it is easy to visit medieval villages of huge historical and artistic interest, with examples of the Crivelli brothers work in local churches. This along with the National Park of Monti Sibillini, and the large portale towns make the Marche a very important region of Italy and a very popular holiday destination for tourists.
It is also possible to take Hot Air Balloon rides when the conditions are suitable. This amazing ride will take you above the beautiful landscape of the Marche and Monti Sibillini mountain range.
