The agriturismo
The farm is located on the Etna's slopes in Sant'Alfio, very close to the thousand year old "Castagno dei 100 Cavalli - 100 Horses Chestnut". From the property located in the Etna guests can enjoy a magnificent view of the Mediterranean and the majestic Volcano with its summit craters. It offers accommodation in rooms, local dishes and tasty traditional recipes.
The accommodation
The property, nowadays transformed in a tourist facility used to be a Benedict Friars Convent. Its architecture dates to years between the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries and the entire property offers a very suggestive ancient atmosphere. Clear are the architectural changes occurred in later times and due to the need of using the property for different purposes. Ancient tools for wine production date to the Nineteenth century, when the property was used as a wine production company.
The ancient manor today hosts 10 comfortable rooms offering 25 beds in total All the rooms have private bathrooms, mini bar, television, safe and independent heating system. A guardian is always available to satisfy any of the clients' requests. These rooms offer guests the possibility of spending a relaxing vacation in the countryside.
The bed and breakfast format includes an abundant breakfast as well as special prices for those who want to have lunch and dinner on location. The Mediterrenean gastronomical culture finds here its most authentic expression. The property cooking is inventive and uses local and ancient recipes that have been forgotten. The recipes change every season. Many of the used ingredients come from the biological local agriculture production.
The basic menu includes a wide variety of cold and hot appetizers, a tasting of three or four first courses, followed by meat grilled and served on terracotta tiles as well as other second courses accompanied by cold and hot side dishes. Desserts, Rosolio and wine are also included in the menu. It is possible to request special menus for wedding banquets, including cakes, sparkling wines, coffee and after dinner liquors. During winter time the meals are served in three inside rooms; in particular the "fireplace room" and the "living room" offer guests a very unique atmosphere, created by the candle lighting used in past times by the farm workers to illuminate the property. During summer time instead guests can seat outside, where it is also possible to organize cocktail parties for weddings and special occasions.
Finally on location guests can purchase products such as olive oil, preserves, jams, pickled vegetables. Every product comes from the biological agriculture of the area. The market offers selected and unique artifacts, among the most meaningful and original of the Sicilian artisan tradition.
Activities and surrounding
Because of the altitude of approximately 700 meters above sea level, the property is ideal for exploring on Mount Etna. The excursion guides meet the guests directly on location and bring them to the volcano to live an unforgettable and unique experience.
It is also possible to reach the Linguaglossa pine forest and various mountain lodges, such as the Citelli, the Sapienza and Piano Provenzana lodge. The property is only 8 kilometers away from the sea and offers the option of spending relaxing days on the beach.
Finally, only 500 meters away, guests can visit the thousand year old 100 Horses Chestnut tree, which is the most ancient tree in Europe.
