Stayed here early June. Approached by a fairly long (about 1km) rough, unmade road, Masseria Rosella is an olive-producing estate. It is in a perfect setting with the main house and accommodation surrounding a well-kept, grass enclosed courtyard. Externally, there is a magnificent backdrop of hills behind with a beautiful panorama of the valley and hills in front.
Alessandro, the host, is very welcoming and took pride in pointing out the dining room, the two guest lounges (one with satellite TV, video, DVD), library and swimming pool before showing us our room.
Rooms appeared to be converted from old servants quarters or stables with solid wood ceilings and were rustically furnished with good quality dark wood furniture. For some reason, there was a lock on the heavy wood door that could have graced a bank! The room was clean and everything worked with the exception of the shower head, which was seized up in one position and had poor flow. A small table and chairs are located outside the room on the grass.
The good sized swimming pool was a short walk from the courtyard area with comfortable loungers.
In typical Agriturismo fashion, there is a no-choice menu. However, dinner (Euros 25) was substantial and ours consisted of a spaghetti (puttanesca style) starter, followed by a breaded veal escalope with sliced grilled potato, aubergine and tomatoes, washed down with copious amounts of local red wine. This was followed by an an almond flavoured dessert and fruit. The only real complaint being that coffee was charged for - a little cheeky considering the room & dinner charge.
Breakfast was basic Sicilian - juices, cereals, bread & jams; there was no salami, ham or cheese.
All in all, an ideal place to spend some time to relax, swim or walk. The nearest towns or villages are some distance away and the provision of a small fridge would have been handy to cool the bottled water provided. Alessandro, please note!
