Chiusa di Carlo
Avola (Syracuse)
- Traveller rating:
Although surrounded by a classical countryside landscape, the farm holiday is just a few hundred meters far from the sea.
The Syracusan territory covers a number of areas of high archaeological, environmental and naturalistic value.
A few kilometres from the agritourism the archaeological park of Siracusa can be visited to admire the Greek theatre, the Dionysius Ear, the Altar of Hieron. In the old centre of Siracusa, the island of Ortigia, the remains of the temple of Athena (on which the Cathedral was built) and the temple of Apollo can be visited.
The province of Siracusa is also rich in natural beauties such as the oasis of Vendicari, a natural reserve of primary importance for migratory birds flows, the Cava Grande del Cassibile, a deep canyon (300 mt depth in several points) where an uncontaminated nature and traces dating back to the Neolithic can be found, Pantalica is another interesting archaeological and naturalistic site close by.
Another gorge, hollowed by the rivers Anapo and Calcinara, winds through an extraordinary scenery dotted by thumbs which are forming five necropolis, along the old railway from Siracusa to Vizzini. The island of Capo Passero, not bigger than a calcareous reef, is similar to the overturned hull of a boat where asparagus and dwarf palm trees are growing. The Island of Currents, a small round rocky island link by a narrow isthmus to the mainland. Finally, Noto, the world famous pearl of baroque honoured by UNESCO recognition as “World Heritage”, just a dozen kilometres from the farm holiday.
