Review 1 Podere Il Poggiolo 19th ~ 26th May 2017
When you select your annual vacation on ratings alone, there's always a risk that reviews are too positive, and what you actually experience doesn't meet expectations. For our recent visit to Podere Il Poggiolo nothing can be further from the truth. The entire stay was as near perfect from arrival to a sad departure.
Once you've tackled the challenges of the switch back road up to Podere Il Poggiolo, you're greeted with your own little Tuscan Eden.
We were met enthusiastically by Serena and Alessandro who guided us to our room and left us to unwind.
Our accommodation was spacious, consisting of a well equipped kitchen / dining room, bathroom, and bedroom. More than adequate for two.
The site is set within part of the family's vineyard, complete with a perfectly sized swimming pool, which receives the sun all day long as well as a constant cooling breeze.
Half board evenings were spent drinking Alessandro's excellent wine, and eating the magnificent four course meals prepared by Serena. Each meal deserved a 10/10, constant quality.
During meal time, the true beauty of Podere Il Poggiolo was on show. Alessandro described each dish with pride, explaining the history of the dish, and where the produce was sourced from, emphasising that the small carbon foot print of everything. Meat came from known local contacts, the pasta (if not homemade) was also prepared locally, and all vegetables and herbs came from Podere Il Poggiolo.
Alessandro's pride continued when he engaged with guests, explaining the history of Podere Il Poggiolo, and how the site has developed over the past 20+ years. We were also entertained with stories of the sites pets, especially Dante the wild boar, who Serena and Alessandro had hand reared after Dante had been found by the side of the road by the local vet.
Podere Il Poggiolo, is next to the town of Rufina, which has a good supermarket, as well as a train station (free parking) with connections to Florence.
Serena will provide as much information and detail about the local area, as well as train times.
All in all, Podere Il Poggiolo was a perfect setting to either explore the surrounding area, or even just to relax by the pool in the sun drinking quality wine.
Would we return? Yes we are.
We spent a four night stay on this wonderful farm. Serena and Alessandro are wonderful hosts. From reception to farewell, they were eerily warm-hearted people, whom we then left only with a heavy heart. The apartment was very clean and we felt very comfortable there. The pool is beautifully situated in the countryside between vineyards and olive trees with a view of the Hügellanschaft and there are also sufficient sunbaths and umbrellas. You can spend a wonderfully relaxed time here, as the place exudes a charming calm and serenity and Serena and Alessandro contribute their part for a perfect holiday. The food is just great. The breakfast is very varied (sausage, cheese, scrambled eggs freshly prepared, at least two homemade cakes, jam, fresh fruit, curd and also pizza :)) and everything is fresh and of the best regional quality. The dinner is just amazing. Serena is a master chef and also Alessandro knows, especially in the steak Florentine style, to convince through his cooking. We were also lucky enough to attend a pizza party, where each guest made his own pizza. We also took part in the pasta cookery course offered by at least four participants. In the evening you can enjoy a 5-course pasta menu and try the home-made pasta. From the farm you can reach many interesting destinations for day trips within one to one and a half hours (eg Siena, the Chiantigebiet, San Gimignano). The home-made olive oil and the wine are also a treat. We have also appropriately covered the offered products for the loved ones at home and us. Thanks again Serena and Alessandro for the wonderful time. We will be back. Grazie e ciao Jessica and Pascal
