Poggio ai Santi
San Vincenzo (Livorno)
- Traveller rating:
At Poggio ai Santi, you will rediscover the joy of opening a garden door, of breathing the wonderful fragrances of maritime pine trees and lavender or rosemary. A few steps away, you can watch horses and donkeys wandering freely around the park.
The breathtaking panorama of untouched countryside, stretching right down to the coast line 5 kilometers below, and the far away vision of the islands of Elba and Corsica, starkly outlined against the immense blue of sky and sea, never cease to enchant our guests.
The “Poggio ai Santi” Farm has planted 8 hectares of olive trees on the 22 hectares of its land which, situated on the spurs of the Tuscan hills, commands views of the sea towards the Isle of Elba. Production is entirely organic. The olive trees of this district, 150 metres above sea level, do not have to withstand the slightly harsher climatic conditions of the Tuscan interior or of Provence. Here in fact frosts are unknown. At present, 500 adult trees make it possible to obtain a modest annual yield of “Poggio ai Santi” olive oil of about 1,500 bottles containing either .75 of a litre or 1 litre. The 2,000 olive trees planted in 1997 (of five varieties) will allow us gradually to increase our production up to an annual level of 8,000 bottles.
