These grounds are rich in history, in fact old documents tell about Montalto like a village which takes its origin around the 762 A.D. under the longobard domination when a bishop from Lucca dedicated a chapel to San Giorgio.
People tell that from 1130 it started to be considered a Castle situated on the ridge that, still today, divides the lands between Montopoli and San Miniato.
A boundary area then that thanks to its strategic position a look-out one, was often the object of harsh conflicts and vindication between the Ghibellines from Pisa and Guelphs from Florence.
Because of these fights, in 1355 the castle did not exist anymore and there were only few evidences and finds which, still today, people can meet with in the woods around, besides the foundations of the little church of san Silvestro, where they are jealously preserved.
