Pienza (Siena)
- Traveller rating:
Pope Enea Silvio Piccolomini established Pienza, which is situated about 2 km from S. Quirico d’Orcia. It is a culturally enriched town with numerous monuments and works of art. It sits upon a hill, facing Valdichiana, just opposite of Monte Amiata, at about 500 meters above sea-level.
In the neighborhood, there are many small medieval villages: S. Quirico D’Orcia, Bagno Vignoni with “Le terme di Lorenzo il Magnifico”, Montalcino famous for the world-renowned “Brunello” wine, Monticchiello with the “Teatro Povero”, Montepulciano, the birth-place of the great Poliziano, Chianciano with its spas, and Monte Amiata and its naturalistic itineraries characterized by luxuriant vegetation and interesting wildlife.
About 40 km away is Siena: the most representative city of the arts, where you can see monuments and visit museums of historical interest. It is also famous for the “Palio”, a traditional horse race which takes place twice a year, at the beginning of July and the middle of August.
