Nonna Rana
Cannara (Perugia)
- Traveller rating:
Nonna Rana presents the opportunity to those who want to discover the simplicity and wholesomeness of the Umbrian country life by enjoying the joy of contact with the land as shown in the olive harvest, the care of the garden and the poultry.
The central location is a superb base for touring Umbria. The nearest town, Cannara (3 km) offers all the services needed to enhance our guests’ stay (supermarkets, restaurants, banks, bakery, open market). Cannara has ancient origins. Its name comes from the reed (canna in Italian) which was abundant in the marshy land that surrounded the town. The floral decorations on the feast of Corpus Christi are the major celebration of Cannara’s artistic creativeness. The people of Cannara make carpets of fresh and dried flowers representing religious or secular themes or ornamental motifs along the streets of the city. People come from far and wide to see them. The hamlet of Collemancio sits on a hilltop nearby and has only one hundred inhabitants. It’s a picturesque village surrounded by walls and towers in a good state of preservation. On the hill you can see the ruins of the ancient Roman municipium of Urvinum Hortense. Assisi is 10 km away. We suggest that you visit the Basilica di San Francesco decorated by the greatest painters of the 13th and 14th centuries: Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti, the Cathedral of San Rufino where St. Francis was baptized, with its Romanesque facade dating from the 16th century, and the Hermitage where St. Francis retired to pray and meditate. Spello is a little town of Roman origin not far from Nonna Rana. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore (XIIIth century) displays some of Pinturicchio’s famous frescoes. Spello is as famous as Cannara or even more for its floral decorations. Montefalco rises on the top of a hill surrounded by a beautiful countryside and vineyards which produce excellent wines. Many of these wineries are open daily for drop-in tastings. Five minutes’ drive away is Bevagna, the ancient Roman city of Mevania, rich in historic remains. Do not miss the fair of the “Gaite”, a faithful re-creation of daily life in the Middle Ages along the evocative lanes and corners of the four wards of the town. The nearby town of Deruta is world famous for its ceramic art which dates back to the Middle Ages and still represents the main activity of the town. Crowds of majolica shoppers visit Deruta year round. Bettona was funded by the Etruscans. The well preserved Etruscan city walls stand in many parts of the town. Not to miss is a visit to the local gallery (Pinacoteca Comunale) which exhibits some paintings of Perugino and Dono Doni.
