Località Mattalè, 08039 Tonara (Nuoro)
The farm is set in the green of the woodlands, at the foot of the Gennargentu mountains: it offers typical cuisine, dishes made from mushrooms, which are plentiful in the area, and vegetarian food prepared using the farm’s own or local raw materials. Honey, produced on-site, is eaten with local cheese specialities (sebadas and coccois de casu).
In the heart of the Barbagia, a farmhouse surrounded by an estate and a garden with swimming pool. The agriturismo offers accommodation in double and triple rooms and sells asphodelus, chestnut and strawberry tree honey produced on-site.
Bicycle trips and walks are organised on request. In Tonara, famous all over Sardinia for its handmade Torrone, visitors can tour the production site and taste the product just made. Another must-see are the craftsmen who hand-forge cattle bells according to a tradition passed down from father to son.
Just a few km from the town are the vineyards of Mandrolisai and the Gennargentu mountains, rich in flora and fauna, a perfect location for marvellous excursions.

I have stayed at a number of Agriturismo's across Southern Italy over the last few years and have always found them excellent, so I had high expectations of Agriturismo Mattale. I was not disappointed on my week long visit in early June. The Agriturismo is in a lovely isolated and tranquill setting a couple of miles outside the mountain village of Tonara. Before my visit I had informative and friendly contact from Miriam (the owner) and she gave me her phone number in case I got lost finding the Agriturismo (useful as it turned out!). The food at Agriturismo Mattale was excellent and provided in vast quantities. I managed the 5 course evening meal my first two nights but then had to ask Miriam to leave out a course as I felt I was overeating. A large hearty breakfast was also provided and enjoyed.
Miriam is a lovely friendly person always happy to help and I enjoyed the conversations we had, just wished my Italian was better!
My main reason for visiting was to walk in the Gennargentu mountains, and Agriturismo Mattale is ideally placed. The start of the walk up Punta laMarmora is less than 30 minutes drive away and there were many other mountain walks easily accessible from the Agriturismo.
All in all a wonderful stay and would love to return again in the future.
Strongly recommend. Though the location, food, and accommodations were all top-rate, our favorite part about staying here was the hostess herself, Miriam. We had so many conversations with her, learning about her life and stories, and she made our vacation truly special. Of course, the food was great, highlights of which were wild mushroom risotto and wild strawberry jam. We would be remiss to not mention Miriam's dog, Benvenuto, who barks with his companion at anyone approaching. The atmosphere in Miriam's dining room was warm, inviting, and homey, all the guests eating together and getting to know each other. Agriturismo Mattale was truly an experience not to forget.
Miriam is an exceptional host that welcomes you in one of the first agriturismo of Gennargentu. A large house in a peaceful forest setting, with simple but comfortable rooms. At meals Miriam creates a friendly atmosphere by having guests meet and sharing her stories. Probably ideal place also in the autumn or spring for hikers (Punta la Marmora, Gennargentu chain, etc.). Thank you for your warm welcome!
