The agriturismo
An agriturismo in the countryside of San Donato, which stretches from the Talamone Gulf to the hills of Magliano, countryside sculpted by the floods of the Albegna river, where an ancient Etruscan settlement once stood. The owners made their life's dream a reality, creating an “agro-cultural” set-up which practices sustainable farming, protecting biodiversity and preserving often ignored rural know-how.
The name La Retomada, the owners' linguistic homage to the many years they spent in Latin America, identifies the spirit with which their adventure was undertaken upon their return home to Italy. “Retomar”, in Spanish and in Portuguese, means to resume, to restart.
The accommodation
Nestled in peaceful countryside, just a few minutes’ drive from the beaches of Talamone and Monte Argentario, the agriturismo offers guest accommodation in apartments and twin or triple rooms (with bathrooms and air conditioning), plus access to a large communal kitchen and plentiful outdoor space, with loungers, hammocks, a children's play area and barbecues.
The farm respects biodiversity, producing healthy food without the use of chemicals. Crops include local varieties of wheat, selecting and reproducing their own seeds: Gentil Rosso soft wheat and Cappelli durum wheat. The small greenhouse contains the seed bed, the organic vegetable garden is fertilised using compost made from organic waste and macerates, and in the orchard you'll find hazelnuts, walnuts, bitter oranges, peaches, plums, apples, pears, figs and persimmons, as well as around 40 different ancient plant varieties. The fruit is used to produce homemade jams for guests to enjoy at breakfast. In the 0.5 hectare olive grove there are young and ancient trees, used to produce an outstanding extra virgin olive oil, without chemical treatments.
