The accommodation

Agriturismo St.Nicolò is located in the southern hills of Tuscany, on the border between the provinces of Siena and Pisa, close to a diversity of small archaeological sites and beautiful areas of environmental interest. To one side are the Metallifere Hills with the Geothermal Museum, Geotermical site of Biancane or the fortress Sillana. The agriturismo consists of two stone farm buildings, one of which is also our home, recently rebuilt in typical Tuscan rustic style, on the edges of the small ancient Medieval suburb of Montecastelli Pisano. A magnificent Etruscan grave can be found close nearby. Montecastelli Pisano is itself part of the wider administrative commune of Castelnuovo Val de Cecina), situated in a relatively high geographical area known locally as the Maremma Toscana (at some 500 meters above sea level), in the "Metallifere Hills", rich in rural landscapes, some forested, others agricultural, interspersed with wild crags and geothermal steam vents. Our farm is organic. We specialize in wheat, spelt, delicious olive oils and typically Tuscan wines, all of which you can sample and buy from us during your stay. The farm buildings are surrounded by a large garden for your children to play in freely (although we ask you to take care that small children are properly supervised near the swimming pool!), ideal for lunches in the open air, with equipment for barbecues and a pizza oven. Near to the barbecue there is a gazebo with tables and chairs for eating all tougher. The swimming pool measures 12 by 6 meters, and is surrounded by a solarium with sun loungers and parasols. In the surrounding vicinity you can find small sites of environmental, archaeological, and historical interest, a short trek away, on foot or by mountain bike. A short drive away are the magnificent cities of art as Siena, Florence, Pisa, Maritime Mass, and Volterra where you will find all the amazing Etruscan and Renaissance art Tuscany is world-renowned for, as well as the unique ceramics and objects made of alabaster. And of course there is the magical Mediteranean sea. All of these are easily reached within 40 minutes, by car or by public transport.

Activities and surrounding

The medieval suburb of Montecastelli Pisano was founded in 1184 by the Pannocchieschiâ?? family, and the bishop of Volterra. It is situated in a typically strategic position on top of a steep hill dominating the valleys of Cecina and Peacock. The country was developed to exploitat mines of iron in the slopes of the countryside following the mass deportation of the local inhabitants and forced resettlement into two small villages that exist to this day before the year 1000AD. Chiesa di Montecastelli Inside the town, we find the Pannocchieschi tower (pears representing the secular power of the dominant family) and the Romanesque Church of the Saints Phillip and Jacopo (symbolising religious power) from the near city of Volterra. Hole of the Fairies is the name given to an important Etruscan grave with a circular structure defined to Buca delle fate. The structure is half buried in the ground, so that only the spherical cover of the sepulcher can be seen. The building it entered through a small access which in ancient days was probably closed by a heavy door made of tufo, leading to a circular room at the centre of which is a large monolithic quadrangular column that supports the roof. From the circular room six cells open, inside each of which there is a sepulchral bed with pillow by the block of tufo rock. The building has been dated to the Hellenistic period of 4th-3rd centuries BC. Chiesa di San Giovanni The small medieval town of St. Dalmazio was a castle that belonged to the female convent of the holy homonym (I don't know what this "homonym" is). Contained by a surrounding circular building it is situated on the side of a hill among the streams Peacock and Possera. Outside the townâ??s boundaries, there is a Romanesque church and a monastery where a tabernacle of the school of Luca of the Robbia is preserved. Rocca di Sillano or Fortress Sillana (11th Century AD) is set in a dominant position overlooking the whole valley. It is one of the most important examples of Medici fortifications and of the Renaissance military architecture, erected to defend the copper and silver mines that were built in the territory. It was the subject of much conflict between the territories in Florence and Siena because it played an important strategic role for controlling the inner territory and its mining resources.
