The agriturismo
On a hill overlooking Polignano a Mare, just 4 km from the town centre, the farm is located in a green setting, reminiscent of Tuscany, with pines and cypresses.
The farm is named after the 17th century wooden crucifix on the altar of the adjoining church: here, on the last Sunday of September, the Feast of the Cross (Sagra del Crocefisso) is celebrated, along with a special fair, with the participation of the entire district to celebrate Mass outside, in the churchyard.
This is followed by a long series of fireworks, set off in the fields along long stretches of age-old olive groves, closing a charming folk festival.
The accommodation
Commissioned by Vitantonius Zaclia and built in 1614, the building was then donated to the Church and used as a summer residence by the Bishop of Polignano.
Painstaking renovation has created suites on the first floor: carefully decorated in keeping with local country tradition, they offer a spectacular view of the olive groves and the typical Apulean shallow rainwater channel (lama) below, skimmed by the original vegetation and enriched by the scent of the citrus grove.
From the terrace, the characteristic shape of the front of the church gives the feeling of being on the bow of a ship.
Several rooms, each different in its architectural details, make every event unique. The menus, prepared with produce from the organic vegetable garden, are based on Apulian tradition and Mediterranean flavours, with a little fusion.
Activities and surrounding
Set between Castellana Grotte, Polignano a Mare and Putignano, a few miles from Alberobello and the Itria Valley, the farm is in the middle of an area in which it is possible to visit places that form the cultural and tourist heart of Apulia.
It takes just 10 minutes to reach the coast in Polignano a Mare and continue towards Monopoli and Ostuni.
In addition to participating in cookery or gardening courses or seasonal farm work, guests can borrow bikes.
