località salaiolo, 176/a, Localitą Salaiolo 58054 Scansano (Grosseto)
Nestling in the Maremma hills, the agriturismo is immersed in the lush Scansano countryside.
It’s a family-run sheep and cattle farm that also produces and sells IGP certified extra virgin Tuscany olive oil, chickpeas, whole wheat flour and almonds, and also has a vineyard that produces an excellent Morellino di Scansano red.
Guests can participate in the grape and olive harvest, take a tour of the winery on appointment, take part in oil tasting events or enrol for introductory cheese-making and cookery classes.
Guests are accommodated in the historic stone-built farmhouse in 4 tastefully appointed rooms with private bathrooms and mosquito screens on the windows; the Inverno guest room is equipped to accommodate guests with special need. The proprietors have deliberately banished TV sets from the establishment, allowing guests to take in the magnificent surrounding landscape undisturbed.
The communal room provides the perfect setting for breakfasts prepared with the farm's own produce, from delicious desserts to home-baked breads, fruit preserves and yoghurt, speciality cheeses and seasonal fruits. The communal area also offers a kitchen at the disposal of guests.
Visitors can hike and jog in natural surroundings, admire the star-studded night skies, entertain their children on slides and swings or with the farm animals (a horse, rabbits, chickens, calves, cats and a dog. Because of the resident pets and animals, the proprietors regret that they are unable to accommodate guests' pets).
Guests can roam freely around the 90 hectare estate and help out with the grape and olive harvests. A tour of the local cooperative winery can be booked to observe the vinification process. The farm also organises oil tasting events plus introductory cheese-making and cookery courses.
With a 40-minute drive, visitors can explore the Argentario peninsula and the resorts of Orbetello, Porto Ercole, and Porto S. Stefano with boat trips to the famous Isola del Giglio and Giannutri islands. The Parco dell'Uccellina nature park is highly recommended, with the magnificent beaches of Alberese, Scansano, Pitigliano, Sovana, and Capalbio, the Saturnia spa centre (just 30 minutes away), Monte Amiata with the Monte Labro wildlife sanctuary (just a 50-minute drive away). In the middle of August the town of Scansano hosts costumed pageants, archery, and early music events; the grape festival is held at the end of September while the Morellino Classical Festival offers concerts throughout the summer months. Motorcycle enthusiasts will appreciate the opportunity to explore the many miles of winding country roads in the area.
