The agriturismo
Le Farnie is located at 350 m above sea level, in the hills of Altomonte, Calabria. It is located near the Pollino National Park, between the Apennines, the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Hospitality is offered in a late 19th century farmhouse restored and furnished with period furniture that overlooks a large and panoramic portico.
The cuisine is based on traditional dishes: in the expert cookers of Altomonte they propose recipes learned from their mothers and grandmothers. The ingredients are of the highest quality, almost all of which come from our own organic production or from local producers. For all the preparations we use only extra virgin olive oil from our own artisan oil mill.
The accommodation
The farmhouse is situated on the hills of Altomonte, in Calabria, between the Nathional Park of Pollino, the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas. It is an organic farm and produces extra-virgin olive oil in its own artisan olive press.
Hospitality is offered in an old farmhouse built at the end of the 1800s and now entirely renovated.
Guests are accommodated in an old farmhouse that has been entirely renovated, furnished with antiques and opens onto a portico with a panoramic view.
Guest accommodation consists of five bedrooms with bath en suite; meals can be taken in a restaurant that seats fifty persons and has a large fireplace.
Guests can enjoy good, traditional food (book in advance). Among the renowned and tasty dishes are "lagane e ciciri" (hand-made pasta with vegetables), "zafarani crushki" (crisp peppers), wild chicory soup, home-made flour gnocchi with ragù and farmhouse chicken en casserole with wild origanum.
Guests can also take part in the everyday activities on the farm: for example, olive-picking and helping to produce extra-virgin olive oil in the farm's own artisan olive press; or preparing vegetables in oil, jam and marmalade.
You can also take courses in cookery or agriculture. Or you can enjoy walks or go for rides on a mountain bike; and play bowls or table tennis.
Activities and surrounding
The farm, organically grown, produces extra virgin olive oil in its own mill. It is located in an area particularly suited for the production of quality oil: there are currently about 3000 olive trees in cultivation (our cultivars are: rotondella (or roggianese); carolea; coratina; nocellara messinese; cassanese). In addition, a family orchard, a seasonal vegetable garden and an artichoke garden are cultivated.
"L 'Antico Frantoio del Castello' (registered trademark) is an integral part of the farm and its production of extra virgin olive oil has handed down a family tradition that began in 1909.
The original location of the oil mill was for almost a century in the basement of the Castle of Altomonte (hence the name of the brand). In 1994 the mill was moved to new premises on the farm, entirely renovated and equipped according to the latest regulations on production, packaging and food hygiene.
The mill mills olives from the Altomonte countryside, hand-picked from the tree when they have not yet reached full maturity and processed within 24 hours.
The transformation is carried out with the traditional system of grindstones in granite and with a single cold pressing.
The extra virgin olive oil produced in this way, besides having a low acidity, has excellent gustatory and olfactory characteristics thanks to its richness of aromas and the characteristic fruity taste.
