"Comfortable accommodation close to Bologna but close to main road with disappointing breakfast"

    06/21/2019

My husband and I recently stayed 2 nights at Il Cavicchio. Frederico, the owner, speaks excellent English and was on hand to welcome us with a welcoming glass of his own wine and to check us in. Frederico recommended a few local restaurants and made a booking for us at the one we chose. Our room on the ground floor was simply furnished and clean. The bed was large and comfortable. The wifi worked and the pool was clean and we appreciated being able to have a dip after a day of sightseeing in Bologna. Parking was also provided at no charge and the property is smoke free as described. The pool and breakfast area are set in a pretty rambling garden with a view up towards the hills behind the house. Overall the accommodation and facilities were homely and comfortable. That said, Il Cavicchio is close to a main road and the noise from the road can be heard from the rooms. Never having stayed at an agriturismo before, I was expecting it to be a bit more secluded and rural. Similarly, as it is described as an organic farm, my expectations were that breakfast would be home made, with produce from the farm. Unfortunately, breakfast was disappointing. The bread was sliced bread from the supermarket, pastries were individually wrapped, long-life type items, the cakes looked like they were also supermarket bought, there were no vegetables and on the second day the only fruit, some apricots, were bruised and not edible. There was some cheese and salami but literally only 4 or 5 slices were put out at a time and not being covered , they looked dried out.Yoghurt, boiled eggs, and granola was also available. As described, they had jars of their own jam on the breakfast bar which was a step in the right direction but they were unfortunately not particularly good jam. I feel bad being critical because we did not dislike Il Cavicchio or the people, who were kind and helpful, but I do feel they are missing an opportunity to be really good by providing food that reflects where they are located and is in keeping with their organic farm/agriturismo status.

    Federico

"An oasis just outside the gates of Bologna"

    08/23/2017

We spontaneously decided to get to know the valley and the countryside between Bologna and Florence, through some stages of the Via degli dei (the road to the gods). In view of the high season mid-August, we were glad to have gotten a quarters at all, and one with a pool (with salt), which promised the necessary cooling at 35 degrees of heat. In short: we have come without great expectations and thoughts, after two nights and filled, splendid hiking days animated and wonderfully enriched: around the meeting with Federico, where we felt from the first moment well and in good hands , And this was not only due to the glass of his delicious Sangiovese, but to his sympathetic character, his special charisma, which permeates the property atmospherically. You can feel his manuscript, his personality in every gesture, every word, every gesture, in the form of an incredibly pleasant hospitality. He's always there at the right moment, and only then. The hospitality is of course also versatile and concrete: with great restaurant tips like the Carosello in Pianoro, where you can sit wonderfully in the green, the delicious breakfast with homemade jams, pastries and fruits from the own garden, the tastefully and practically furnished rooms (With many books) or the possibilities to settle in the garden comfortably. And if you have a spontaneous desire for a big city, it is only 15 minutes to the heart of Bologna. Just everything in, on and around Il Cavicchio is worth a short trip. That is why there were only two things to say in passing: grazie e alla prossima.

This agriturismo is hosted by a multilingual individualist. Humoristic and well educated, a great but also modest entertainer. He was there for us.
The accommodatie gave us what we came for: comfort and feeling at home. Other guests had the same attitude.
Our second visit this year was too short, because the region and Bologna are both incredible beautifull and outstretched. Our transport was bus and bicycle, beside our car. In all its simplicity it gives you all you need to relax and to surprice and amaze you.

Thank you for your hospitality Frederick and Rafaella During our short stay at the dowel. This was our first experience of an Agri Tourism in Italy, and what a great find it was; only 20 minutes by bus into the city of Bologna, yet nestling in the beautiful countryside of Emilia Romagna. the dowel sits in a 7-acre plot, with gardens and a swimming pool. The land is worked with a vineyard, orchard, herb garden and strawberry patch. A wood extends upwards from the back of the property, ideal for walking out. federico Produces His Own wine, Which we can highly recommend! Inside, the property is modern and spotlessly clean. The bedroom was well appointed with an ensuit bathroom and the bed was extremely comfortable. Recommendations Were Given For local restaurants for the evenings and breakfast was served each morning. Frederick and Rafaella were very friendly and happy to give advice for our holiday in Italy. Frederick helped with our onward plans and contacted our next agri tourism by phone to make a reservation for us. We can definitely recommend the dowel and would happily stay there again. It's a shame That Agri Tourism is not Widely heard of in the UK as it's a fantastic way to Experience Italy and its culture. Gavin & Annette

"Il Cavicchio is a wonderful place"

    10/29/2014

Il Cavicchio is a wonderful place in a green area on the outskirts of Bologna (10 minutes by car to the center of Bologna). The vines climb the mountain next to the house and the house owners produce organic wine (no preservatives) of excellent quality. The spotless rooms and Federico and Raffaella simpaticissimos and owners are very nice. I've been there with my two daughters and my parents over a puppy and we had a great, Federico recommended several places to visit in and outside Bologna. I recommend the site to anyone!

    "A great base for exploring"

    06/09/2014

We stayed here with Federico and Raffaella for four nights in mid May. We had chosen the room which had some self catering possibilities, including a small fridge, and we availed ourselves of this on two occasions when we made delicious ‘picnic’ style meals of breads, ham, olives, cheeses etc. (plus a bottle of Il Cavicchio’s own delicious red wine). Evening meals are not available here, but this was not a problem as there are a number of good restaurants very close by. The lavish breakfast – including home-grown strawberries and home-made jams - is very good indeed. Bologna is so close and Ravenna, which we visited to see the fabulous Byzantine mosaics, is only 1- 1 ½ hrs away by the autostrada. We took a leisurely walk up through the wood onto a small road which meandered along a ridge, with lovely views on both sides, including some interesting rocky outcrops which had been formed by soil erosion over the centuries and which Federico called ‘the Badlands’. Flowers, butterflies and birds were in abundance all day long. Federico and Raffaella couldn’t have been more helpful and charming. We were able to converse easily with Federico, a fluent English speaker. He’s really knowledgeable about the area - and informative about all the things that tourists really need to know (!) – where to catch the bus; where is the nearest food shop etc. etc. We would have liked to stay much longer – we have barely scratched the surface in Emilia Romagna. We do hope to return again to Il Cavicchio; hopefully it will not be too long before we do.

We stayed here three nights and were not only impresses by nice and individually furnished and spacious room, the good bus connection to Bologna, the really well prepared dinner (and breakfast first) but first of all by the friendly welcome of Federico. We enjoyed the good suggestions and little talks and would not hesitate to come back again at any time.

Kindness and familiarity, the genuine hospitality of Romagna combined with a comfortable and well cared for: I found this at Clavijo. Recommend anyone to go there, because, despite being a step away from the center of Bologna, one breathes the air of the countryside and you can enjoy a genuine and well maintained.

We stayed here after a late night phone call to Federico (the owner) with a plea for accommodation. He was more than accommodating. The place is wonderful, an absolute bargain minutes from Bologna. Crisp sheets, massive bathroom, lovely breakfast and a brilliant recommendation from Federico for dinner. His English put my Italian to shame and his hospitality is out of this world. I'm going back! Thank you Federico, you saved our holiday.
